An early guide to the Indian Premier League, taught one idea at a time

We have written this the way a good coach runs a session. Each module introduces one part of the competition, defines every term the first time it appears, and finishes with a short practice task so you can check that the idea has actually landed.

Work through the five modules in order if franchise Twenty20 cricket is new to you. If you already follow the league closely, skip to the module that covers the gap you want to close.

Learning the league is mostly learning constraints: twenty overs, a fixed purse, a limit on overseas players in the eleven, and a surface that changes under lights.

Five modules, in the order we teach them

Each row shows the level we have pitched the module at, the number of sections inside it, and an honest reading estimate. Nothing here depends on knowing a squad list or a points table, so the material stays useful whenever you read it.

  1. How the tournament is structured

The league phase, points, net run rate, the four-team playoff ladder, and the playing conditions that decide tight finishes.

  2. The auction and squad building

  3. Grounds, pitches and conditions

How to work through the guide

Reading about cricket and understanding cricket are different skills. The steps below turn this guide into a short course rather than a set of articles.

A four-step progression

  1. Read one module, once, without stopping. Do not chase every term. The definitions are written into the flow of the text, so a single pass gives you the shape of the idea.
  2. Read it again with a match in front of you. Any completed Twenty20 match will do, including a domestic one. Pause at the end of each phase and say out loud what the batting side is trying to protect.
  3. Write the practice task by hand. Every module ends with one. Handwriting forces you to commit to a judgement rather than nodding along.
  4. Check yourself on the module checkpoints. If you cannot answer a checkpoint in two sentences, go back to the section it points at. That is the whole loop.

Five terms worth learning first

Over
A set of six legal deliveries bowled from one end. A Twenty20 innings is twenty overs, so each over is one twentieth of a side's batting resource.
Powerplay
The opening block of overs in which fielding restrictions apply and only a small number of fielders may stand outside the inner circle. In Twenty20 cricket this block is the first six overs.
Death overs
The closing overs of an innings, where batters accept more risk and bowlers rely on yorkers, wide lines and pace changes.
Net run rate
A tie-breaker for the league table: the run rate a side scores across the competition minus the run rate it concedes. Run rate simply means runs per over.
Crore and lakh
Indian numbering units used when auction spending is discussed. One lakh is one hundred thousand; one crore is ten million.

Where we send you for anything time-bound

Playing conditions, squad composition rules and competition structure are set by the organisers and can be revised. This guide teaches the mechanisms, not the current paperwork. For anything that must be current, read the official material: the Indian Premier League site, the BCCI, the ICC and the MCC Laws of Cricket.
